The Bicycle Alliance of Washington advocates for a bicycle-friendly state, educates people of all ages to increase transportation safety,
develops more inclusive communities for cycling, builds a coalition of organizations, and seeks to make bicycling accessible to everyone.
We do this by:
Lobbying in Olympia. The Bicycle Alliance works with a professional lobbyist in Olympia to forward our
Legislative Priorities - he is our eyes and ears, but members are our voice.
Involving You. You can help advocate for safer streets and greater bicycling accessibility by:
Connecting with Members and Partners Across the State. The Bicycle Alliance works to reach out to our members and
board members, to clubs and organizations, and to local governments, bicycle boards, and elected officials across the state.
The Legislative and Statewide Issues Committee works year-round to identify, research and prioritize key issues for cycling
that need to be addressed at the state level. We connect you to the latest issues and
topics, help build capacity for better bicycle infrastructure, and seek to hear from you about legislative needs.
Bicycle Alliance's 2012 Legislative Agenda
The Bicycle Alliance board approved a set of legislative priorities as recommended by the
Legislative & Statewide Issues Committee.
The 2012 agenda includes:
- Safer Neighborhood Streets. Continued support of
HB1217 -
the Neighborhood Safe Streets Bill - which would give cities and towns the authority to establish 20 mph zones on non-arterial streets to provide local control, remove red tape, lower accident rates, and protect vulnerable users.
[HB1217 Fact Sheet]
- Better design standards & Complete Streets. Continued support of
HB1700, which carries over from 2011 and would encourage higher-quality bike and pedestrian facilities by allowing greater flexibility in design standards.
- Investments in transportation. Work with other non-profits to support a statewide transportation funding package.
The Bicycle Alliance has teamed up with the Transportation for Washington Campaign - a coalition to support a more balanced
state transportation investment package that emphasizes public health and safety, as well as funding for biking, walking, and transit
- Funding Complete Streets Projects. Collaborate with WSDOT and others to support funding for the
Complete Streets (HB 1071) bill passed in 2011.
- Explore Legislative Next Steps. Use 2012-2013 to see if there is support for a 3-5' safe passing bill and, if so,
build a coalition of support.
