SR 520 Bridge Replacement Draft EIS

The SR520 bridge across Lake Washington has pretty much reached its useful lifespan and will be replaced. Replacement options have been studied for years. Now in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Washington State's Environmental Policy Act (SEPA), a draft Environmental Impact Statement has been released. It evaluates a No Build alternative, a 4-lane alternative, and a 6-lane alternativewith design options for the 6-lane alternative.

Public comment is being sought through October 2, 2006. You can provide input several ways:

  • Attend a public hearing:
    Seattle - 9/18/2006, 4-7PM, Museum of History & Industry, 2700 24th Ave East
    Bellevue - 9/21/2006, 4-7PM, St Luke's Church, 3030 Bellevue Way NE.
  • Online at www.SR520DEIScomments.com
  • Via email at SR520comments@wsdot.wa.gov
  • Snail mail to Paul Krueger, WSDOT Environmental Manager, 414 Olive Way #400, Seattle, WA 98101

Make sure you let them know you want bicycle access on the new SR 520 Bridge!

Spokane to Move Forward With Fish Lake Trail

Spokane Parks Department held a well attended meeting in late August to update the public on the Fish Lake Trail project. To complete this trail, two bridges must be built to cross busy railroad tracks and this has driven up the cost and additional funds must be secured. Their was unanimous support from attendees to see this regionally significant trail completed and Mayor Dennis Hession, who was in attendance, promised that it would eventually happen.

Wanted: Friends for the Fish Lake Trail

The Bicycle Alliance is teaming up with the Inland Northwest Trails Coalition, Spokane REI, and other interested parties to organize Friends of the Fish Lake Trail. This group of volunteers will be trained to lead walks and bike rides along the undeveloped portions of the corridor so citizens can experience and envision what this trail could be like. Members will also lead work parties to clean up segments of the corridor, and advocate for the trail's completion. This project is supported by a grant from REI. Interested in getting involved? Contact Louise McGrody, 206.224.9252 or Louise's email.

Safe Routes to School Update

After co-teaching 15 Safe Routes to School classes with Washington Department of Transportation staff, Dave Janis the Bicycle Alliance's Safe Routes to School lead is assisting several communities around the state with their grant applications. The educational component is the focus of his efforts. The schools vary from urban settings to once rural, now fast growing communities. The wide range of settings and needs is allowing the Bicycle Alliance to provide resources, expertise, and expand their assistance role and presence around the state.

The classes also provided the Bicycle Alliance the opportunity to promote the benefits of bicycling. Dave's work is being funded by a Transportation Enhancement's grant. Contact him at 206.224.9252 or by email for more information or assistance

The Bicycle Alliance is a non-profit VOLUNTEER POWERED organization. We work for you, but also, we NEED you. We have an ongoing need for office volunteers: data entry, filing and other tasks always need to get done. Our annual auction would not happen without over 100 people giving generously of their time. We need advocates in every corner of the state to work with government officials And there are always special tasks for special skills that can help the cause of bicycling throughout Washington.

The easiest way to get involved is to come to our monthly volunteer work PARTY. On the last Thursday of each month from 1pm to 8pm at our office in Seattle we have a workparty with lots and lots of yummy goodies (chocolate is a specialty), socializing and working to further bicycle advocacy in Washington. We would love to have you join us. Drop in on the last Thursday afternoon. We need your help. Call Mark at 206.224.9252 or send Mark email to RSVP, to get directions or to get more information.
